$10M+ healthcare gifts in June 2023:

• Wellcome and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are investing $550M in the pursuit for a new tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, that if proven effective, would be the first vaccine to prevent pulmonary TB in over a century.
• The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Agence Française de Développement have committed $240M to launch a new strategic partnership to advance gender equity and human development across Africa and South Asia.
• The University of Kansas Cancer Center received $100M from the Sunderland Foundation to support new cancer research and a new care facility.
• Blake Mycoske, the founder of shoe brand Toms, has donated $100M to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies to research treatments for PTSD and depression, including psilocybin, MDMA, and other similar compounds.
• Cryptocurrency founders Vitalik Buterin and Sandeep Nailwal have pledged $100M to Crypto Relief to help accelerate Covid-19 research and relief efforts in India.
• Children’s National Hospital received $96M from an anonymous donor for research into rare pediatric brain tumors and patient care.
• The Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah announced a $75M gift from the Huntsman Foundation to establish a second cancer research, prevention, and treatment headquarters in Utah county.
• The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a $50M investment in partnership with the Beijing Municipal Government and Tsinghua University to support the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute in its efforts to improve health outcomes worldwide through therapies for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, which disproportionately affect the world’s poorest.
• The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus received a $50M gift from the Anschutz Foundation to accelerate advancements in healthcare innovation which are poised to reach patients within the next three to five years.
• The University of California Irvine announced a $50M gift from Susan and Henry Samueli to establish three multidisciplinary research institutes including the Engineering+Health Institute which will house research into information technologies that bring medical care to underserved communities, synthetic biology to enable customizable disease treatments, and the combination of data science and biomedical device development.
• The Albanese Government has invested $73M AUD ($48.3M USD) in new medical technology and research facilities, supporting 19 projects, in Australia.
• The Institut Pasteur de Dakar and the Mastercard Foundation have announced a $45M partnership named MADIBA (Manufacturing in Africa for Disease Immunization and Building Autonomy), a multi-year project aimed at developing and building a workforce to support vaccine manufacturing, establishing a Centre of Training Excellence to equip talented young people, particularly young women, with specialized skills in vaccine research, manufacturing, production, and distribution.
• Falmouth General Hospital received a $45M donation from the Jamaica Awareness Association of California to support a new laparoscopy machine.
• Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, and the University of Calgary received a $50M CAD ($37.7M USD) gift from the Arthur J. E. Child Foundation to support the capital campaign for a new cancer centre in Calgary.
• Florida State University received $30M from an anonymous donor to support its new College of Dentistry.
• NewYork-Presbyterian announced a $25M gift from the P. Carey Foundation which supports a new residency curriculum designed to provide residents with the skills needed to be a doctor in the digital age, including foundational training in digital medicine, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and other advanced technologies.
• Oklahoma State University received a bequest from the Boone Pickens Foundation, of which $25M supports the recently announced OSU Human Performance Innovation Complex which will enhance the health and wellness among students, OSU athletes and the broader Oklahoma community. The facility will house the Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute (HPNRI) and the Cowboy Football Center.
• The University of Washington School of Medicine received $20M from the American Heart Association for an initiative aimed at better understanding and mitigating factors that negatively influence the health of rural Americans.
• University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital received a $15M gift from Robert J. Jursich Sr. to establish the Robert and Marthe Jursich Care for Children Fund to support the people, programs and facilities that ensure advanced pediatric care for patients and families.
• The Garfield Weston Foundation has awarded £10M ($12.6M USD) to Moorfields Eye Charity for Oriel, a new integrated centre for advancing eye health which will be the new home for Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, opening in 2027.
• The University of Calgary Hotchkiss Brain Institute received a $12.5M bequest from Boone Pickens to support its research; the institute is named for Harley Hotchkiss, Mr. Pickens’ longtime friend.
• University Hospitals received $10M from the Veale Foundation to address healthcare’s interaction with evolving technology, establishing the Veale Initiative for Health Care Innovation.
• With a $10M gift from the Windgate Foundation, the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith nursing program will be able to serve more students, which will send more nurses out into the workforce at a time of state and national scarcity.
• The Boys & Girls Clubs of America will implement trauma-informed practices to support the emotional and mental well-being of children with a $10M, four-year pledge from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
• A $10M gift from the Arbour Way Foundation will launch the Robin S. Wolpow, PAR’14 and Marc B. Wolpow, W’80, PAR’14 Fund for Healthcare Entrepreneurship at Venture Lab, the center for student entrepreneurship at the University of Pennsylvania.
