$10M+ healthcare gifts in May 2026:
- Shaare Zedek Medical Center received a $200 million gift from WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum on May 8, the largest donation in the history of Israel’s healthcare system. The gift funds a new 24-story inpatient tower and renames the institution the Koum Shaare Zedek Medical Center.
- Washington University in St. Louis received a $200 million commitment from the Bursky Family Foundation on May 13, the largest gift in WashU history. The gift names the university’s new School of Public Health and supports faculty hiring, scholarships, and research initiatives.
- Santa Clara University and Sutter Health announced a $175 million gift from venture capitalist Mark Stevens and his wife Mary on May 15 to launch the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine. The gift establishes the first new medical school in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than a century.
- Baptist Health Foundation received a $100 million gift from Dr. Herbert Wertheim on May 20, the largest in the organization’s 66-year history. The gift establishes the Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute Transformational Impact Fund and renames Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute in his honor.
- UCSF received a $100 million commitment from Kathy Chiao and Kenneth Hao to support capital projects, innovation initiatives, and cancer research. The gift allocates $50 million to facility upgrades, $40 million to innovation, and $10 million to the Weill Cancer Hub West, a UCSF-Stanford research collaboration.
- University Hospitals received a $12.5 million gift from Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam on May 6 to advance blood cancer research. The gift allocates $10 million to the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Centre for chronic lymphocytic leukemia drug development and $2.5 million to UH Seidman Cancer Center for an endowed CLL research chair. The gift was motivated by Dee Haslam’s own CLL diagnosis in 2021.
- Northern Light Health received a $10 million gift from Jim Gero on May 27 to establish the Jim and Cathy Gero Center for Genomics and Advanced Therapies at the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute. The center will expand access to genomic clinical trials and precision oncology for patients across northern and central Maine. The gift honors Gero’s late wife Cathy, who died from cancer in 2022.
