$10M+ healthcare gifts in March 2024:
- The World Health Organization received a total of $600M in pledges from three organizations – The World Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and UNICEF – supporting the goal of eliminating cervical cancer via expanded access to vaccination, screening, and treatment worldwide.
- Marc and Lynne Benioff made a $150M investment in healthcare access in Hawaii. Developed through a collaboration across three different hospitals, the donation provides $50M for Hilo Medical Center to build out critical areas of care, including a state-of-the-art family birthing center, intensive care unit, and neurosurgical program as well as behavioral health services. Additionally, it provides $100M for Hawaii Pacific Health to help create a “health care campus of the future” at Straub Medical Center. Lastly, the gift deepens connections between both Hawaii hospitals and UCSF Health to provide more specialized care to patients who need it.
- The University of Miami celebrated a $50M gift from Ken Griffin to support the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The gift supports research efforts as well as renames the Transformational Cancer Research Building as the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building.
- Baptist Health South Florida also celebrated a $50M gift from Ken Griffin. The donation supports neurological care and neuroscience research and creates the Kenneth C. Griffin Center at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute.
- Seattle Children’s announced it received a $50M donation from the William Lawrence & Blanche Hughes Foundation. The gift will support the research and development of therapies and treatment options for leukemia and other pediatric cancers.
- Dan and Tanya Snyder donated their home in Potomac, MD, worth an estimated $49M, to the American Cancer Society. The ACS plans to sell the home and utilize the proceeds to serve cancer patients and their families.
- The family of the late David and Mary Harrison made a $55M commitment to the University of Virginia supporting the Department of Athletics and establishing a translational research program dedicated to therapies for Alzheimer’s and related diseases. Of the larger commitment, $30M supports the creation of The Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases.
- The University of Nebraska Medical Center received a $23M donation from the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation, expanding the Walter Scott Jr. Scholarship Program.
- The Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center announced the establishment of the Tom and Julie Wood Center for Lung Cancer Research, following a $20M gift from Julie Wood in honor of her late husband, Tom.
- The University of Calgary received a $20M CAD donation from the Taylor Family Foundation supporting the kinesiology department. Supporting a new facility for the faculty of kinesiology, the gift supports advanced research in exercise physiology, neuroscience, and nutrition.
- Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons announced the Garrett Isaac Neubauer Center for Cardiovascular Innovation, an initiative aimed at advancing the treatment and understanding of congenital heart disease in children, supported with a $15M donation from Lawrence Neubauer.
- NYU Langone Health has received a $15M gift from Wayne G. Holman, MD, and Wendy Holman to further elevate the treatment and study of endocrine disorders in the newly named and endowed Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
- One Health received a $14M donation from the Helmsley Charitable Trust to purchase 143 ultrasound imaging devices to serve rural communities in Wyoming.
- The Yale School of Medicine received a $13.2M grant from The Marcus Foundation to support a clinical trial of a preventative treatment for Parkinson’s Disease.
- Kent State University announced a $10M gift from The Podiatry Foundation in support of the future Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. The Podiatry Foundation Foot and Ankle Clinic is named in honor of the gift.
- Metropolitan State University of Denver received a $10M gift from Gina and Frank Day, establishing the Gina and Frank Day Health Institute to train students in a wide range of in-demand fields, including nursing, nutrition, behavioral health, speech-language pathology and social work.
- Memorial Hermann Health System announced a $10M donation from the Suzie and Larry Johnson Foundation which renames the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and supports Memorial Hermann Life Flight.
- Cal State San Marcos announced a $10M grant from Prince Philanthropies Foundation to create an accelerated bachelor’s degree and workforce pipeline for behavioral and mental health.
- Hackensack Meridian Health received a $10M grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation supporting adolescent behavioral health among the community’s most at-risk youth.
- Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta announced a $10M gift from Michele and David Hirsch supporting pediatric behavioral and mental health services. This donation will support the development of a transdisciplinary program that will treat behavioral impairments in children with complex neuropsychiatric conditions.
- Inova Health System received a $10M gift from Win Sheridan to support the health system’s expansion, critical programs, and urgent needs.
- Western Sydney University celebrated a A$10M donation from the Blackmore Family Foundation to strengthen the NICM Health Research Institute’s research capabilities and support research targeting high priority chronic disease areas where complementary medicine promises the most impact.
